Is it a Costco, or is it a … ?

Is the US bulk grocery retailer Costco about to enter the New Zealand grocery market?

That’s the question raised today by after it identified a 10-hectare site in Auckland earmarked for a major development.

Stuff quotes retail expert Chris Wilkinson as saying the site has all the elements bulk buy giant Costco is looking for.

However, it says the international company behind the development, Logos, is remaining tight-lipped on whether it is in talks with the American retailer.

Logos bought the Wiri site from a subsidiary of Fletcher Building, with plans to build a 55,000-square-metre logistics estate on it.

Stuff reports that for the past month, representatives from Costco have been scoping sites in Auckland, looking for a space that can hold a 15,000sqm to 25,000sqm building and has direct motorway access.

Logos' new development site is along one of Auckland's key arterial roads, and is across from the Conlinx Inland Port, which services the Ports of Auckland.

Costco has 741 warehouses worldwide, most of them in the US and Puerto Rico. There are 10 in Australia, where it has been described as a "supermarket on steroids".
