Industry poorer for passing of John MacDonald

The food and grocery industry will be poorer for the passing of one of its great leaders and mentors, John MacDonald, who died last Friday, aged 80.

Through his industry work and his contribution to Reckitt and Colman, RB, and latterly as a much-valued member of the team at BrandWorld NZ, he became the only person in the industry to be twice awarded the Grocery Lifetime Achievement Award.

He was a former president of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the forerunner to FGC.

Katherine Rich said his influence in the industry was summed up perfectly by BrandWorld CEO Bill Peake on presenting John his second award at last year’s FGC AGM.

“He described John as an industry champion, an inspirational team leader, a respected colleague, a sought-after mentor, an astute marketer, a devoted family man, fun loving, a great mate, but always the gentleman. He finished by saying ‘John, as the advertisement says, you’re a bloody legend, priceless.’

“You don’t get much better tributes than that, and I know I thoroughly enjoyed my coffee catchups with John and his wisdom.

“The thoughts of FGC go to John’s family and friends.”
