Bananas top list of Countdown’s favourites

Fresh was to the fore as Countdown released its third annual Trolley Report, revealing the top 10 products that Kiwis bought in its supermarkets last year.
Firmly in No 1 spot was bananas. In the 12 months to October, Kiwis bought an average of 18kgs of per person.
Chicken was the most popular meat, followed by beef mince and corned silverside.
The list was dominated by fruit and vegetables.
Top selling items were: Bananas, Homebrand $1 bread, broccoli, avocado, sweetcorn, Homebrand Standard 2L milk, strawberries, cucumber, Homebrand Standard 3L milk, red capsicum.
Key statistics from the Trolley Report included:
- Grocery prices at Countdown dropped by 1.2 per cent over the 12 months.
- Shoppers’ favourite meat was chicken with skin-on, followed by beef mince, and beef corned silverside.
- The favourite seafood was salmon, followed by live mussels.
- Countdown customers bought almost 430,000 reusable grocery bags; an increase of around 130 per cent on the last year. Aucklanders are the biggest users of recyclable bags, purchasing more than 180,000 in 2016, followed by Canterbury and Waikato.
The Trolley Report is based on the purchasing behaviour of shoppers at Countdown stores.
