FGC was asked for comment on moves by a Fresh Choice supermarket in Richmond, Nelson, to remove sugary products – chocolate bars, sweets, biscuits, and soft drinks – from its checkouts and replace them with fresh fruit, salads, water, batteries and phone cards.

Katherine Rich responded to Fairfax Media: “Confectionery-free checkouts are not a new idea. Both supermarket chains have been offering this for years. Where store owners want to place different items in their stores is a decision for them. The great thing about supermarkets is that they offer shoppers a choice of around 20, 000 different products.”
