Media response: removing sugary drinks from vending machines
27 July 2016
FGC was asked to comment after Auckland Council announced it is to stop selling drinks that are sweetened by sugar from vending machines at its leisure centres. The council said visitors to the 21 sites would be offered water, unflavoured milk, 100% fruit juice, diluted fruit juice with no added sugar and artificially sweetened soft drinks. The new policy will be introduced between July and October. The council operates or licenses out food operations within some of the leisure centres and the council was talking to those vendors over the provision of healthy choices across all areas of council operations.
Katherine Rich told BusinessDesk: “What retailers decide to offer to their customers is a matter for them. Most people are aware of the need to moderate their consumption of sugars from all sources in their diet."
