FSANZ to look at energy content on alcohol labels

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has been asked to work on a report on the costs and benefits of labelling alcohol with energy content/kilojoules, although no timetable has been set.

The report was requested by the Australian and New Zealand Ministerial Legislative and Governance Forum on Food Regulation.

The NZ Herald recently ran an article on the issue and sought comment. FGC will be monitoring developments but particularly likes a couple of the comments from Herald readers: "Trouble is you are trying to label something that impairs your judgment. Once you have downed 3-4, all warnings dissolve in thin air." And, “label alcohol with kj info, ingredients and warnings [that it] ‘may cause you to believe you're singing in tune’."
