The New Zealand Food & Grocery Council (FGC) represents the manufacturers and suppliers behind New Zealand's favourite food, beverage and grocery brands. These businesses, including some of our biggest companies, and largest exporters, make up the FMCG industry , a major contributor to the New Zealand economy.

Your first question is probably "
What is FMCG? " It used to be called the grocery industry, now it’s just called FMCG. FMCG is an ugly acronym for Fast Moving Consumer Goods , which translated into English means 'things you buy on a regular basis at places like your local supermarket.' Things like butter, potato chips, toothpaste, and razors.

The FMCG industry encompasses many of New Zealand's best known companies, including Goodman Fielder, Mainland, and Hubbards, as well as major multinational groups such as Coke, Colgate-Palmolive, and Heinz-Watties. It also encompasses the non-commodity exports of the agricultural sector from companies like Fonterra, Zespri and Richmond.

The FMCG industry has a wholesale turnover of $9.8 billion representing $15 billion in retail sales. It accounts for $2.4 billion in imports and $3.5 billion in exports. This makes it slightly larger than the electricity, gas and water sector and slightly smaller than the health sector. It employs 35,600 people directly and 147,800 people in the wider sector.

Food & beverage power the NZ economy
A recent New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) commissioned study, which evaluates the economic importance of New Zealand’s food processing sector, shows that exports have doubled since 1990 to $14.2 billion in 2002, and food processing now represents half the total value of merchandise exports from New Zealand.

New Zealand’s largest and most competitive manufacturing sector, it also accounts for 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 31% of manufacturing GDP and 26% of manufacturing employment, with 63,000 full time jobs. New Zealand supplies 2.4% of the world trade in processed foods.

The report, titled Economic Evaluation of the Food Processing Sector, can be viewed and/or downloaded on the NZTE website at www.nzte.govt.nz/foodandbeverage
