1. To provide a forum to discuss issues of concern and interest to the industry.
2. To make representations to Government and other relevant organisation on matters that effect the industry. The Council regularly liaises with departments such as the Ministries of Commerce, Consumer Affairs, Environment, External Relations and Trade and Health on issues such as food legislation, trade practices and environmental issues.
3. To present submissions in respect of legislation and Government reports on issues that have implications for the industry. Submission have recently been presented on Packaging, Waste Management, Dietary Supplements, Folic Acid, Health & Related Claims, Iodine Fortification, Novel Food.
4. Liaison with other sectors of the trade.
The FGC pursues issues of common concern on members' behalf. Recent issues have involved trading terms, merchandising and invoice errors.
The FGC is a member of the Grocery Industry Council (GIC) which also comprises representatives from independent grocery stores, wholesalers and the chains. The GIC is a useful forum for voicing common concerns and for discussing and addressing difficulties which arise between different sectors of the industry.
The FGC also acts as the secretariat for the Food Industry Forum, comprising a representative from each sector of the widely diverse food industry.
The FGC also has representation on the:
(a) GS1NZ Board
(b) ECR Australasia Board
The FGC has a close working relationship with other organisations where there is a commonality of interest including:
(a) Australian Food & Grocery Council,
(b) NZ Retailers Association ;
(c) Grocery Manufacturers of America ,
(d) International Association of Food & Grocery Manufacturers;
(e) The Packaging Council of New Zealand,
(f) Business New Zealand,
(g) UK Food & Drink Federation
5. Industry Codes of Practice are drafted as and when necessary. These Codes include, for example, product recall, coupons, merchandisers, packaging and environmental claims.
